Nathan Shaw

Higher Educational Background

Degree in Computer Science and Management Science from Lancaster University.

Professional Experience

7+ years mentoring/tutoring students, career switchers, and supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds through organisations such as The Prince’s Trust and Code Your Future.

Nathan’s educational path began with a strong passion for music. By 15, he had reached a highly accomplished level on the trumpet and was deeply engaged in performance and composition. While music shaped his creative thinking, he was often told he wasn’t suited for academic subjects like Computer Science. However, when given the opportunity to work on real-world projects and apply concepts practically, he consistently performed at a high level. These early experiences revealed a gap between potential and perception that would later define his mission as a tutor.

At Lancaster University, Nathan studied Computer Science and Management Science. During his first year, he experienced the sudden passing of an immediate family member, forcing him to miss a significant portion of his studies. Rather than fall behind, he independently taught himself the material, which uncovered his gift for breaking down complex content into relatable, understandable ideas.

That experience led to a competitive internship with GE Aviation, where he worked alongside The Prince’s Trust to support homework clubs across schools in Cardiff. He helped students with Maths, English, and Science, many of whom were in need of tailored learning approaches. It was here that Nathan began connecting confidence, access, and outcomes,  especially for students who didn’t thrive in conventional settings.

Returning to university, he took on roles as a Student Ambassador and Peer Tutor. He supported students across all years and ability levels in Computer Science, Business Studies, and Ethics, with a focus on those without prior STEM experience. Nathan also provided personalised support to students with SEN needs, including OCD, ADHD, Dyspraxia, and Dyslexia. These experiences shaped his belief in adaptive teaching and the value of individualised learning strategies.

After graduating, Nathan joined a leading technology consultancy, where he continued his work as a mentor through organisations such as Code Your Future and The Prince’s Trust. He supported career switchers, mature learners, and refugees in navigating alternative pathways into the tech industry. In these settings, he gained even deeper insight into how academic progress is often shaped by mindset, support systems, and real-world relevance.

Now six years into his career post-graduation, Nathan has grown into a committed tutor who consistently helps students achieve their desired outcomes. He has devoted a significant part of his time to guiding students into university, career transitions, and personal milestones. His journey has always been grounded in one mission, to show that ability is not defined by early success, but by opportunity, encouragement, and belief.

Nathan’s tutoring is grounded in three core principles: ownership, environment, and belief. He doesn’t just teach the material, he equips students with the mindset and confidence to take charge of their learning and succeed beyond the classroom.

His sessions are discussion-based, practical, and rooted in real-world relevance. By aligning topics with students’ goals, working on portfolio projects, and encouraging curiosity, Nathan makes learning engaging and meaningful.

He recognises that traditional education often overlooks capable students who don’t fit the standard mould. His mission is to reach those learners early, showing them that they are not only capable but ready to thrive.

Outside of lessons, Nathan empowers students through structured digital resources, including model answers, examiner feedback, and topic-specific notes. These tools help build transferable skills in organisation, critical thinking, and independent learning.

Nathan’s goal is simple: to help students not just understand their subjects, but to understand themselves as learners. With the right tools, guidance, and belief, he ensures every student is prepared to reach their full potential.
