Equitable referral scheme
A fair, transparent referral reward for tutors who help our community grow.
Referring CityBright
At CityBright we believe tutors should share in the value they help create. Our Equitable Referral Scheme rewards our tutors when they introduce new families or adult learners to us, even if another tutor ultimately delivers the lessons.
When a tutor introduces a new family who books tuition through CityBright they’ll receive:
£7.50 for every hour of paid tuition delivered to that family for the first 6 months of their role.
This is on top of the normal fees they earn from their own students.
Important: This referral reward is paid entirely from CityBright’s share of the lesson fee. It does not reduce the teaching tutor’s pay and does not increase prices for families.

A quick example
A tutor introduces a family to CityBright who go on to book 2 hours of tuition per week. Over 6 months (roughly 24 weeks), that’s around 48 hours of tuition.
48 hours × £7.50 = £360 in referral rewards – on top of any tutoring income the referring tutor already earns.
The teaching tutor’s hourly rate and the family’s fee stay exactly the same. The reward comes from CityBright’s margin.

FAQs
Who can take part in the scheme?
The scheme is for registered CityBright tutors. Once you are onboarded with us, you can start referring other tutors.
Who can I refer?
You can refer:
- Qualified teachers
- Academic or Postgraduate tutors
- In-field professionals who meet our tutoring criteria
They must be new to CityBright (not already on our books or in active discussions with us).
What counts as a "successful" referral?
A referral is considered successful when:
- Your referred tutor completes our onboarding process.
- They are matched to a family or student through CityBright.
- They begin teaching and log paid hours through us.
Only then do referral rewards start to accrue.
How long do referral rewards last?
Referral rewards are paid on eligible teaching hours in that specific role for the first six months from the date the role starts.
If the role continues after six months, your referred tutor still gets paid as normal, but the referral reward ends.
Is there a limit to how many tutors I can refer?
No. You can refer as many suitable tutors as you like. There is no cap on the total number of referrals or on how many referral rewards you can earn, as long as each referral meets the scheme criteria.
How and when are referral rewards paid?
Referral rewards are typically:
- Calculated based on the referred tutor’s approved timesheets for each pay period, and
- Paid alongside your usual tutor payments, with a clear note/line showing the referral amount.
We will clearly label referral rewards so you can see exactly what you’ve earned.
How do you track which referrals are mine?
When you refer someone, we’ll ask them to:
- Mention your name when they enquire or apply, or
- Use a simple referral code or link (if we’ve provided one).
We also keep an internal record linking each new tutor to their referrer so we can accurately calculate your rewards.
Does my referral reward come out of the other tutor's pay?
No. The referred tutor receives the full agreed rate for their work. Referral rewards are paid on top, entirely from CityBright’s share.
What if the referred tutor has more than one role?
Referral rewards apply to each eligible role the referred tutor takes on through CityBright:
- For each role, the six-month referral period is counted from the start date of that role.
- You receive £7.50 per hour for the hours they work in each eligible role during its first six months.
What if a role pauses or stops?
If a role pauses:
- Referral rewards pause too (because no hours are being taught).
If the same role resumes within the original six-month window, referral rewards resume for any new hours worked, up to the end of that six-month period.
If the role ends permanently, referral rewards for that role end as well.
Is the referral reward taxable?
Yes. Referral rewards count as taxable income. You are responsible for declaring this income to HMRC in line with your own tax status (e.g. self-employed).
If you’re unsure, it’s a good idea to speak to an accountant or consult HMRC guidance.
Can families take part in the referral scheme?
This scheme is currently designed for tutors referring tutors.
Can I refer myself?
No. Self-referrals are not eligible. The scheme is intended to reward tutors who help grow the wider tutoring community by recommending others.
Can the scheme change in the future?
We may update or refine the scheme over time. Any changes will:
- Be communicated clearly to tutors, and
- Not affect referral rewards already earned or agreed for completed work.
We aim to keep the scheme fair, sustainable, and transparent.
