Results of the 16+ entrance tests are considered alongside predicted GCSE grades, a headteacher’s reference, English language proficiency for overseas applicants, and in some cases a short personal statement.

External candidates for sixth form; places are limited (often ~10–30%), so apply early and broadly.

Usually Oct–Jan of Year 11; interviews follow soon after; offers by spring.

The 2–3 subjects your child intends to take at A level; some schools add English/Maths as a baseline or a reasoning/critical-thinking paper.

Typically 60–90 minutes, set at high-GCSE to early A-level level.

Results feed into shortlisting with interview performance and references. Schools set their own thresholds; some weight subject tests more heavily than general papers.

Yes – offers are usually conditional on summer exam results (e.g., GCSEs or equivalents) meeting subject prerequisites, plus any scholarship/bursary terms.

Plan 8–12 weeks per tested subject: this is so that there is ample time to refresh core knowledge, bridge into early A-level skills, practise school samples, and rehearse interview-style problem solving.
